Vintage Inspiration

Ok. Trying to work on quilts and gifts, but for some reason I can't keep on any one project. All day I have been dyeing fabric to get the perfect color of Haint blue. It's a low country thang! The Gullah people believe it wards off evil spirits or keeps you safe. Something like that. So needless to say, it takes a lot of patience to slowly get the perfect color. While I've been waiting, this sweet baby is calling my name. It was one of the chairs I inherited when I emptied one of my mother's warehouses. I'm thinking a scraps only project. I need to empty my ever-growing bin.

Just a Peek!

Getting ready for a show at Hospice on November 1st. Yeah!

I'm feeling Mom!

Almost through creating the perfect place to sit with my honey. I painted all of my mother's patio furniture.  Even the bunnies were in her yard, but then, they weren't yellow! Did I tell you that the day she died, Becky and I came home at 5 am and we sat out on this very deck and a huge white heron landed in the yard, just a few feet away. Then she spread her wings and so gracefully flew away. :)

Getting ready for strawberry cake. Nothing better, and I have a ton of berries we need to eat.

Not Quite Ready. But Coming Along.

These are the works in my studio that are coming along. They will be ready soon, I hope :)

The first is the a 6x18 oil on cradled board. I worked from a photo I took out on Skidaway Island. I thought the sky colors turned out sweet. This one is pretty much finished and just needs a signature.

 

Next is a 20x20 oil on canvas. It is very sketchy...which is what I like about it. I am painting from a photo I took with my nephew Andrew when the hurricane passed by Tybee last summer. Andrew, an aspiring artist, had just come to live with us. During the storm we lost power and were just sitting around the kitchen table. I looked outside  - it was so quiet and the sky suddenly was amazing. I grabbed Andrew, my iphone, and my Nikon. We chased the light photographing as fast as we could. The sky changed so fast. It was amazing! Not quite through, but I like the direction so far...

 Next is a 30x30 oil on canvas. So far I like the grasses. Loving the rich periwinkle color.

 I also have started a 36x36 oil on canvas. It is at the very beginning stages. Not sure of the direction yet.  I'll show it when it gets further along.

Tada! I did it.

It was fun. I made us a bed. I love the gray micro-suede.
I used 1x12s and covered them with padding and cloth. I had to keep my box springs for my Tempur-pedic. The back is covered plywood hung on cleats. I got alot of the design from www.ana-white.com. Love her site. I have built a lot from her ideas.

Back to work. Today has been a great studio day. Just taking a quick break and decided to let you see my finished bed.

Making Corn Rye

Keep it loose.

Using a small fluid brush, I draw my shapes and negative spaces. I use my dark colors only. And, I don't worry about detail at all.

A fresh coat of paint!

Ok. I admit it. This is one awful painting.




It has been sitting around in my studio for a while. As I was shuffling through canvases to find the right size, I came across this one. I decided this is the day to tackle it. To start, I abraded the surface slightly and wiped it with mineral spirits. Then I studied it! NOPE, it pretty much sucks. Oh well, I think it should be the unexpected in another painting. Sometimes, starting on an old piece, allows random things to pop through that I really like. We will see.




By the way, I turned it just so I wouldn't end up being influenced by the base. I'll keep you posted.

Back in the studio - Encaustic and Nana's Linen's

It was great day. I actually felt good about being in my studio. Granted it is totally chaos and with my creative OCD that drives me nuts! There is the goodwill couch waiting for my attention and the cool chair I ripped the upholstery off of, draped in red and orange fabrics. I am thinking patchwork! There is the table, and apparently my floor too, covered in drips of every hue. Oy vey iz mir. Even so, I just ignored it. I've been dyeing and working with my family linens. I also scanned quite a number of my family photos. In case you did not know, I am exploring this new direction. I love it. I feel connected.

I promised to try and show you the sequential process of a painting. I have to admit, I am really sad at trying to merge a slideshow... too bad my kids aren't here to rescue me. But alas, I think I did it.  I always love to watch other artists work... as an artist, I love to share. I think it is great to gather info from all sources.

Finally cathing up

I know I told you I was trying something new last month. But then I had a show in the gallery, closely followed by our annual small works show today. Whew! That being said I wanted to show you three babies I finished.

Remember, I was quilting and interpreting my landscapes... that evolved into abstract quilting with my mom's vintage fabrics... which evolved into mom's fabric hand-dyed and worked into these exquisite encaustic pieces.
